Jesse Puljujärvi - What I Wish I Had Known as a Young Player

I reached the highest levels of hockey at a young age, playing for teams such as Oulun Kärpät, the Edmonton Oilers, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. These are environments where the standards are among the highest in the world.

But I learned one important lesson early on.

More isn’t always better.

When I was young, my mindset was simple. If I trained more and trained harder, I would become a better player. No one really taught me what to train, when to train, or how much was actually enough.

I learned those lessons later.

The hard way.

Injuries, double hip surgery, and the rehabilitation that followed completely changed the way I approach training. Today, my focus isn’t on doing more. It’s on training with purpose, managing the workload, and understanding how the body performs and recovers.

That’s the foundation of Is It Time Performance.

My training philosophy focuses on the qualities that make the biggest difference on the ice, without unnecessary wear and tear:

  • Speed and explosiveness that translate directly to game performance.
  • Strength that supports your body instead of breaking it down.
  • Smart training periodization that allows you to keep improving throughout the season.

The idea is simple.

Every workout should move you closer to your goal. Anything that doesn’t is just unnecessary fatigue.

You don’t have to make the same mistakes I did.

You can learn how to train the right way today, and improve faster, smarter, and with a lower risk of injury.
